speedo/odometer not working

need some help from the NBR guru crowd. My speedo and odo stopped working yesterday. I got home thinking it might just be loose, gave the cable a turn or two or three at the cup and tried it again but no dice.

I took the cable off and the pin, see pic, pretty much fell out into my hand. I cant tell if its been sheared off inside the speedo or its supposed to be like that? It also looks like the pin has a thin guage wire or two wrapped around it?

any thoughts or advice?
