Just back from Vegas Report . . .

Well kinda just back anyway . . . I just didn't have time to check in until now.
So I'm back from Boot Camp and it was a brutal and humbling experience! I never realized how much I didn't know until I entered the Octagon! What a beating!
Vegas002.jpg

I know what you all are thinking . . . this fucker went to Vegas for 2 weeks, how bad could that have been? Well let me give you a daily run down of my life each day.
The Microsoft Training Facility was located on the 4th floor of the Flamingo Hotel.
Vegas072.jpg

My hotel room was on the 8th floor.
Vegas006.jpg

This was my after hours study arena. Yes they do have Maid Service!
Vegas007.jpg

Class started promptly at 8am every morning and went non-stop except for a few 15 min breaks and a 45 min lunch break; and it finished at 8pm at night. I got there at 7am every morning to get some breakfast and check emails and pre-prepare for the day. I stayed about an extra hour each night talking with the instructor and the other 8 people who took the Bootcamp with me. We could ask questions or practice shit in the labs. Then I would go straight upstairs to my room to study what we learned that day. I would turn the light off at 11pm to try and get enough sleep to awake at 6:30am to get ready to get down there by 7am the next morning. This is basically how my schedule was every day!

There are 7 exams you have to take in a Prometric Testing Center, which is a very official Microsoft Certified “No Nonsense” facility that you walk into with empty pockets! No fucking around at all or you’re tossed! I took the first exam 70-290 and failed it by 1 question! 1 Fucking question! They base their tests on 700/1000. If you get 700 or better you pass. Microsoft is currently giving free vouchers for a 2nd try right now . . . otherwise it costs $125 a test. OK, so I go back to my room and put the full cram on that night and I’m really ready the next day to use my free voucher and pass this test, which by the way is the easiest of them all, they get progressively harder as you advance from test to test. I go back in the next day and take it again. Just before I push the finish button I say a prayer to God to please make this a passing grade! I guess he was busy because after I pressed the finish button I Failed; this time by 2 fucking questions!

OK – I fucking freaked out because this means I cannot re-take the 70-290 test for 14 days and I have to now pay $125 for the re-take. Furthermore, I am now disqualified from coming home with my MCSE or even my MCSA which only requires me to pass 4 tests. Both of these certifications must have the 70-290 passed in order to get the cert. Now I’m seriously depressed.

OK, I’m now going to try and gather it up and just pass as many as I can so since the 70-290 is no longer an option I start cramming on the 70-291 which is the next easiest test. Back to my room after classes and full cram on. I kinda lost track of time and days when I was there so I cannot really put any of this in chorological order; but anyway I feel I’m ready to take the 70-291 and I go downstairs to the 4th floor several day later and take it. I fail it by about 10 questions! Now I’m fully on TILT! I’m convincing myself that I’m stupider than my boss says I am! I’m at one of the lowest point in my life now with a full-on depression going! I decided that I better not use my voucher for the free retake. I even decided that taking the 70-293 was probably a bad idea and I better either kill myself or listen more closely in class. Unlike the motherfucker in front of me who was doing FaceBook all day. I thought he passed his exam which really torque me off, but I was to find out later that he didn’t pass a single exam except Vista Client. Which is useless because they are phasing this out like that piece of shit Windows ME. Microsoft will be rolling out Windows 7 soon and let me tell you right now - it is a slick ass operating system!

My Instructor sees me the next morning and realizes that this guy is probably gonna jump from the window and finish himself off so he pulls me to the hallway and we take a walk and have a talk. He explains that I’m going to have to study the Microsoft way now and begin to think answers to test questions the Microsoft way so that I don’t fall for their squirrel traps! He tells me that Microsoft wants you to do things their way which, many times is different than the way we do things in a normal production environment on a daily basis. He said that he would teach me how to prepare for a Microsoft exam, how to reverse engineer out the answers that are not possible, how to decide which answer out of the ones that were left is the right answer!

I began to cram for the 70-294 Active Directory exam his way, the Microsoft way. I crammed for a complete day solid. I then went into the Prometric testing facility and took the test. I pressed the finish button about 2 hours later and I scored an 825! Yeah Baby! I got 1 in the pocket! I now have just enough confidence in me to drive on! I apply myself with my new found confidence and pass my 70-297 which is probably the hardest test of them all. It has 6 different complicated scenarios that you have to read through and then answer about 6 – 8 questions. The problem is that each scenario is timed and when you press start you might be given 18 min to complete Scenario 1 and answer 6 complicated questions. Hers the thing; you could easily spend the first 15 minuets just reading the scenario, which would not give you enough time leftover to answer the questions. What they do is they give you an ass-load of information inside the scenario and a lot of it is completely useless. So the trick is as soon as you press the start button you go right down to the questions and right them down on a piece of scrap paper they give you as fast as humanly possible. Then you go back and read the scenario and try and fill in the puzzle!

After that exam, I circled back and passed the 70-293 and on the very last morning just before I was going to the airport I took the Vista Client exam. That one was a real brutal ball-buster because I have never used Vista before. I use XP Pro. There were 64 questions and you had 2 hours to do complete it. I swear to God the first 4 questions were multi-faceted simulation questions where you had to actually perform the correct task. I wasted so much time on the first 2 that I panicked! I quickly made a decision to check mark all simulations and return to them. I answered all of the regular multiple choice questions and all of the drag and drop questions and had about 40 min left. I went back and did the simulations I knew how to do. Then I quickly made a list on paper 1 – 64 and check marked every question I was sure I had right. I came up with 50 questions I knew were correct and 14 questions I wasn’t positive about. I decided to count the unsure questions as wrong and then I did the math. If you have to get 700/1000 and there were 64 questions which I knew 50 of them were right then I would pass the exam if the unsure 14 were wrong. Seeing as it was time to go to the airport & I was in Vegas, I decided to roll the dice with my mathematical thinking. I pressed the finish button and what do you know? Not only did I pass but I score an 836! I guess some of the unsure ones turned out to be right!

So I head for the airport and to wrap up this long report, I get home and into bed on Monday night at 2:30am sick with strep throat and fever and I’m up and off to work 4 hours later to an empty office with a huge list of marching orders waiting for me. Since then I have logged in 12 -14 hours a day including weekends trying to catch up. This is the first time I have had a second to relax. I have already begun prepping myself to circle back and take the 7-290 in April and the 70-291 in May which will give me my Microsoft Certified System Administrator (MCSA) certification. Then all I need to do is take any elective I want and pass that test this summer and I get my MCSE and I’m Golden!

Next step after that is to upgrade the MCSE to Server 2008 which requires an additional 2 – 3 test. Well, if you have read this far you are either really bored, a total Computer Geek like me, or just a friend who is interested in another friend! Anyway, good to be back and I hope to have some spare time soon! Just to make this official . . . my Bonneville is still in the garage winterized. I’m waiting for the street sweepers to do their thing and for the weather to get a little warmer. I’ll probably take her out in the middle of April providing the rain stops.

All right - so there was just enough time to play some Black Jack!
Vegas035.jpg

The amazing thing was after 2 weeks I came home up $125! Two weeks in Vegas and I came home UP $125! Did you hear me, or are you still looking at these in house distractions?

Here are some other shots I took -
This is their over 21 pool area. The weather was to cold to swim so it was a ghost town out there.

Thanks for the report, always interesting to see how the other guy suffers.....lol
Interesting way it turned out though, that guy must be an angel for helping you understand the "microsoft way" or, how to speak in microsoft.....it's rare air up there, and i'm sure you are finding that out in your tests.
How did you do at blackjack?

We're all Geeks in some part of life! This geekdom is where I make my money to survive though! :)

You could always go back and work for Blackwater. :)
If this doesn't kill me first I could always get killed with them; or arrested for killing people who hate us!

How about a FUCKING HUG? See you in Bennington soon!

You wouldn't believe how many Koi there were in that tropical garden! All in all, in 2 weeks, with the very limited time, I was at one time up $450. My goal was to make $600 so I could buy the wife the Beretta PX4 Storm sub compact in 9mm as a present for completing the NRA safety course and submitting her CCP paperwork. However they tried their best to take it back little by little. I was determined to leave there with some of their money. I had $300 left on the last morning. Right after my final exam, while I was waiting for my pickup, I went back in for 20 min and dropped $175. So I said that's it! I'm leaving with $125 . . . and that's exactly what I ended up with. However, I played Hold'em Friday night with the Traders and won $300 so I put that away to Hedge the $599 price tag of this DA/SA piece.

The last time I was at the Flamingo was in 1980 and things in Vegas were very different. There were no big corporations running things and everything was a comp! This trip found me realizing that the Flamingo was probably the only original casino left; but the face lift took the quaintness from what it was 20 years ago! This place is now like a Disneyland for adults.

Thx Seth - just trying to keep my job like everyone else! I applied myself 100% while I was there. If my boss was a fly on the wall he would have been proud of the way I conducted myself and realize he didn't waste a single penny on me.

Thx - I'm already 500 pages into my original book and I'm in full prep mode right now. I figure I can pass the first one in April and pass the 2nd one in May and fulfill the MCSA requirement that the boss stated to get my discretionary bonus. However, after that I will pick 1 elective and pass that exam and go beyond what he required and scoop up my Engineer's certification! But 1 step at a time my friend!

Thx all for chiming in . . . even though it was not one of my more interesting posts! But a man has to do what he has to do so he can get squared away in life and this is one of my requirements so the sooner i fulfill this the sooner I can begin to relax again.
Hedge out!

I feel your pain with the training classes. I've been to some cool destinations and gotten to go out 0%. I did the CISSP in LV and didn't really go out much. The good news is I got the certification. Great to have you back!

Hedge, I was laughing my ass off reading your report of Microsoft Boot Camp. Made me glad I'm not a systems guy even though you systems guys get well paid for what you do. No way would I want to go through all those tests, for any amount of money. Especially with the distractions of Vegas - no way could I concentrate on crap like that with a casino downstairs. You did good! I hope you are doing bennington this year. I'll ride up with you guys if you are going - gonna get a tent site with the Rockers, but would still like to ride up with you and charlie, if he's going. Anyway glad to hear you're still alive and well.

Ahso - the only security I'm familiar with is my HK45c! :D

Yep - going back up and your welcome to ride up with us from the start or meet us along the way. Whatever works for you. I'll go with the flow. If everyone is camping then so shall I.
