how to spend my money?

I "retired" in my mid-50s and went to part-time work, officially three days a week, sometimes more. Luckily, I'm in a job where that is easy to do.

I intend to stop altogether in the next 5-10 years, but I haven't fully evaluated the financial consequences of doing that. I can do it, but I'll certainly have less disposable income and will probably not be travelling as much as I do now, or at least not taking the big, expensive trips.

I have no compulsion to move to a "red" state.

Perhaps you should renounce citizenship and retire abroad since you don't like the way this country is headed. Put your money where your mouth is and bounce. Retiring in another country does offer advantages.

that is easy for you to say; you dont' live in a state run by liberal entitlement socialists.
there I said it

maybe I should consider the Isle of Man

I can't leave for a while though as I renewed my driver's license today

Move to Wyoming or Idaho. My goal is to move to Idaho and become a Skinhead... no offense meant towards Skinheads.

Tennessee is a wonderful place to retire.
No income tax, low cost of living, housing is cheap, great roads to ride, easy access to anywhere else in the country you want to go.

Enjoy your your money that you worked hard to save.

Your decision. YOU earned it. YOU spend it.

Congratulations.

I see retirement not as an age but an ability to live financially, for me that's probably never. But I have accepted it it long ago. When people talk about retirement and pensions and having to work until 65, I just politely walk away.

Well first of all, congratulations! The fact that you can look forward to a comfortable retirement is an accomplishment itself. You obviously know how to manage your money and live within your means and that's not likely to change in retirement, so your funds will probably last as long as you need. Based on that alone it seems you are wiser than I am, so I wouldn't presume to advise you, but my mind turns to what I would want to do when and if I reach that same point in my life.

I think I would prefer to fill my life with experiences as opposed to things. I might take that dream motorcycle road trip from Cape Spear to Lands End. I might like to go see if Greenland is really green and Iceland is really ice. I might try the Mexican food in Mexico to learn if it's as good as it is in El Paso. And when I'm 90 I'd like to glance over at a little glass on the shelf and remember that shot of tequila I shared with the pretty lady who didn't speak any English.

Yeah, those are the kind of things I think I'd like to do in retirement. I could go on but I gotta go to work.

My retirement was abrupt and unexpected. I thank God I have enough to "get by" so to speak.... if I don't do anything stupid.

Pick out one of your bikes and go for a nice long road trip. That's always an adventure.

Whatever you do don't even think about Illinois, unless you want to live in the laughing stock of the country, like I do.

i've been in austin for a few yrs now. no state income tax, economy is doing well, city is growing which is leading to traffic but they are adding infrastructure and great riding is just a few miles to the west in the hill country. weather is good if you can make it thru the summer heat, low humidity. austin is a liberal, hippy, hipster part of the state but you can just ignore or avoid those areas for the most part if you so choose. austin isn't as progressive and forward thinking as it likes to portray itself. it's more talk less walk in that department.

there is a good riding community throughout the state also.

We just had our rockers vs mods rally. They also have one in Dallas and Houston. ROT (republic of Texas) rally in a few months. Another big one in Galveston every yr. The twt.com, two wheeled Texans, have a pie run every month at different cafes and mom & pop places for food and pie. Shit, I'm starting to sound like i actually like Texas. It must be growing on me.
