Day 3

We woke up on the third morning refreshed and ready to go. We made the lost time up on the second day because of how things started out for us, we had a great nights sleep, a hot shower and a hearty breakfast. I quickly grabbed my camera and snapped off some shots now that it was light out:

the loft that the bikers slept in using futon beds:

we now were in the stretch of the island where we had to leave the ocean and travel through a mountain pass. I know what you are thinking...what a living hell to leave the twisties of the ocean to have to travel up a mountain and back down it!

Day 3: time for education

Now everything can't be about riding and we all need to learn something so on this day we learned about Abashiri prison. This is THE hardcore prison of Japan. originally built in 1890 under the leadership of the emperor Meiji to house the most hardened prisoners in Japan. More importantly though; Japan had Hokkaido; an incredible rich island in resources but with extremely harsh climates to deal with...very similar to the Alaska dynamic for America. The government was worried that the Russians would travel across the cape down into Hokkaido and start claiming the island as there were virtually no infrastructures. So the prisoners of Abashiri got the privilege of clearing the way for road construction at a time schedule that would guarrantee that human life would be expended during the process. It didn't matter what your sentence at Abashiri was...if you were sentenced there...you would die there. The old prison stayed open up until 1988 and was closed and turned into a museum where the modern one was built down the road. A prison musuem that is the equivalent of Alcatraz and an internment camp for three dudes riding motorcycles across the country??!!! No shit we stopped there!!

the bridge leading to the facility:

a little shrine to pray and kiss your ass goodbye:

IMG_4427.jpg

One of the cool things in Japan is that prisoners get put to work and the prison sets up a store selling hand crafted wood items. They do the work, the prison sells it and uses that money to help run the institution. Needless to say...I bought some things and had it Fed-Ex back to my house:

a magazine holder of two kendo dudes fighting for my boys room:

IMG_4438.jpg

a row boat for my boy:

IMG_4437.jpg

toilet paper holder for the bathroom that holds a whole sleeve of shit paper...I thought this was this greatest thing!

IMG_4436.jpg

full on dresser sets

IMG_4434.jpg

IMG_4435.jpg

a bench that flips over and become a picnic bench for two. this was only $300 and I desperately wanted it for my boys but unfortunately they didn't take cards...only cash and I didn't want to drain my expenses for the trip

your living accommodations while visiting Abashari...notice the nice oak log pillows

IMG_4480.jpg

IMG_4481.jpg

IMG_4482.jpg

the surprising thing about Abashari is how the prisoners ate...very well! They were paving the Siberia of Japan to make roads during the winter so they were going to die off even under good conditions. Prisoners ate 3-4 thousand calories per meal and consisted of rice, vegetables, fish, meat and pickles. The prison system also used the prisoners as an experiment in farming/agriculture techniques as they harvested their own food. A lot of their farming techniques quickly was shared to regular agricultural industry down on the mainland.

I loved this part...up until the '80s; the prisoners would harvest the rice fields for the Sapporo beer company. They did this so the beer company could collect the rice to make their beer and sell it.

prisoners were also responsible to train and care for the pigeons as this was their only means of communication until the early part of the 1900s

What do you think the best thing to do is after touring through the harshest prisons in Japan? You got it...throw a leg over your Trumpet, go elbow down and put that wind of freedom in your face as far away from those cells as possible and that is exactly what we did. We rode as if we were possessed...as if we were re-inforcements charging into battle as the others desperately waited for our arrival. Alright...alright...nothing that dramatic. We knew we had ground to make up as the next stop was the most northern point of Japan where you can see Russia across the way. We knew the prison was going to be a long detour so we rode like a bat out of hell to make our goal:

IMG_4541.jpg

IMG_4542.jpg

IMG_4544.jpg

IMG_4545.jpg

IMG_4546.jpg

the northern coastline definitely got more baron, flat and a cross wind that would send you sailing into the other lane. The land definitely got harsher to more we pushed upward until we finally hit our mark and took up in a tatami room for bikers right on the ocean

oh yeah...in case you are wondering about the arrows on top of all those roads....those are for the winter time so that a driver knows where the edge of road is located at and doesn't drive off of it

we are now three days into our adventure and made it to the most northern point in all of Japan...we were doing it and feeling damn proud of it until the next where we learn the irony of a tubeless spoked rim...

TANG: My hat is off to you buddy! Thanks for the most excellent documentation of your travels! One of my favorites is the "fuck you bridge" which we all have traveled... one way or the other.

Keep 'em coming and safe travels!

Day 4

We wake up to crystal blue skies ready to begin a new leg of the journey...heading south. We made it to Soyamisaki, Japan...the furthest northern point in the country. There is no more heading north...that part of Hokkaido adventure is now over:

IMG_4560.jpg

IMG_4552.jpg

the tatami room hotel we crashed in late the previous night. To our pleasant surprise...this hotel was direct across the street from the most northern point. We started the day with seeing the highlighted attraction and then start rolling.

IMG_4558.jpg

The landmark for the most northern part. The next piece of land after this belongs to Russia.

IMG_4554.jpg

IMG_4553.jpg

Don't know who this is but it is a Samurai next to the monument...he had to be a bad ass!

IMG_4555.jpg

IMG_4552.jpg

Russian property:

IMG_4556.jpg

The tourists didn't start showing up yet so we did what every responsible rider would do...hop the grass and ride the bikes to the monument!!

IMG_4566.jpg

IMG_4564.jpg

A map to give you a reference; the upper most point of Japan has the triangle monument of where we were at. Other side...Russia

We finally get rolling and the first thing we notice in the next town we roll through is that road signs are now in Russian.

IMG_4572.jpg

We are less than 30 minutes into the trip. His brand new tubless spoked rear wheel is leaking air! $1500 custom wheels that he just got and he can't keep air in them. Good news...he could go for 2 hours and would need air. Bad news...custom service for mechanicals on Hokkaido SUCK! No one had an inner tube on the entire island and we were looking at a week before anyone could get it. HORSE SHIT!

A picture showing my buddy's appreciation of the hard time I was giving him. Notice the bicycle pump strapped to his pack now:finger2::lol3:

IMG_4573.jpg

IMG_4574.jpg

We accept the dilemma we are in and feel lucky that it doesn't fuck with our trip. We still have the next half of the coastline to finish up and at least we can do it with a minor inconvenience of airing up every couple of hours.

We stop to get fuel and this is at the point where we are heading south where we discover certain gas stations sponsor "Hokkaider." This is a program set up to where you can get a flag for $1 and the island is cut up into categories. Ride all 4 categories and get all 5 flags. We already had 3 of the sectors blazed and couldn't go back! We explained to the guy at the station and even got our cameras out to show him...he apologized and said that he was only authorized to have the blue flag because of where his station is...MOTHER FUCKER! We came back home with 2 of the 4 flags even though we rode the damn island!

IMG_4578.jpg

gas station Bonnie. I brought a 2.5 gallon tank with me but ended up not ever needing it. There were plenty of stations...even up north. Oh well...lesson learned. I guess it is better to have it and not need it than the other way around. The Harleys I was riding with had 5.5 tanks so their range was a lot longer than mine.

IMG_4579.jpg

IMG_4581.jpg

IMG_4583.jpg

IMG_4587.jpg

I caught my buddy airing up his ride while sitting on my bike. Naturally I got the camera out and started busting balls. He told me he needed some of the Bonnie luck to start rubbing off on him. He wasn't familar with the Bonnies but was EXTREMELY impressed on how the Trumpet was taking the trip. He couldn't understand how he was pushing his Train to keep up with me

IMG_4588.jpg

IMG_4589.jpg

We finally get back down to civilization and had to run on the outskirts of Sapporo. I look over and notice a single rider that kept on following us...we would always keep a couple car distance but he was definitely curious with us. Finally, at a stop light while my other two buddies were talking about something, I looked over my shoulder and waved the guy in to join us. A big smile broke on his face and he joined our small pack and we rode for a while in the city together.

IMG_4591.jpg

We take a break and to his surprise...he sees two American faces as the helmets come off. He told our buddy that he loves cruisers/roadsters but all of his friends are on crotch-rockets and said that he always wanted to ride in a pack with a MC. I told him we were different...we were a VMC; we were all veterans that serve our country so we are working plain joes that love to ride. You could tell that it made his year and he said that he was going to ride with us to Orasu, where we were planning to camp, and then two around and head back home to Sapporo. Sapporo to Orasu was about a 2 hour ride so he went 4 hours out of his to ride with us...good stuff!

This is him trying to call everyone he knew in Sapporo to score an inner-tube but no luck. It wasn't because of the lack of trying though...there really wasn't an inner-tube on that fucking island!

IMG_4594.jpg

We get to Orasu and discover that this is the hometown for the Japanese astronaut that was on the Endevaur. EVERYTHING in that town had a damn space shuttle!

IMG_4596.jpg

We pull up to a beach directly facing the Pacific and pitched our tents and slept like babies listening to the waves of the Pacific ocean
