Velocity pipes

Nevada Bob does a good job on his 'Velocity' pipes. The weight saving over the stock Aust/NZ/SA spec exhaust system (no built in cat converter) is exactly 5.1kg (11.2lb) and we had Sunstate Motorcycles install the same tune that is used for the Arrow twin pipe slip-on cans. A dyno run has produced 130RWHP with the new pipes and stock air filter but the 'seat-of-the-pants' dyno reveals a meaty boost in power right through the range being partularly strong in top gear roll-ons at overtaking speeds. Even though the recently sold B-King with Yoshi's dynoed in at 168.5/103, the Speed Triple feels just as quick except perhaps when the road straightens out enough for the BK to properly hit it's straps. The 45kg weight difference between the two bikes plus my recent 16kg dietry weight loss probably accounts for the similarity in on-road feel between the two bikes.

Although the B-King handled well and could be hustled through the tighter twisties with quite some pace, I feel the S3 is super quick and sharp much like the Streety is when the going gets tight and in a direct contest with equal riders, the Speedie would emerge out the other end in front. Anyway, enough ramblin'... here's the pics!

This last pic shows the position of the exhaust gas sensor located just a bees-dick away from the rear spring. The sensor on the non-cat systems has a smaller thread (12mm x 1.5 pitch) than the threaded hole supplied on the pipes so we had to fit a larger bolt, cut half the head off so it wouldn't foul the spring plus allow the sensor to protude into the pipe enough, then drill and tap it out to suit the thread on the sensor. Ideally, Bob should relocate the sensor position a few degrees to the right to provide extra clearance with the rear shock. The pipes arrive in uncoated condition and therefore turn brown and daggy looking real quick so we had the mid-pipe section ceramic coated. IMO, this impoves the look 100% and makes it much easier to clean even though it cost another hundred bucks! http://chainreationmoto.com

Sunday July 19.
Rode to the Storey Bridge bike show in Brisbane today. Run by the Laverda club, this is one of the main 'show and shine' type events on the yearly SE Qld calender with vender stalls, new bike displays, all the old marques on display, dyno comps etc. The winner of the dyno comp went to a new V-Max with 190 hp followed by a ZX14 with 180hp and a number of other notibles. We paid our 20 bucks and ran the S3 getting a respectable 130hp flat. Mods include the Velocity pipes and the Arrow twin pipe tune. Quite pleased with this result since we are still running the stock air filter and the bike has only done approx 600kms at this stage so all in all, a good result.
