Scrambled Sidecar

I have been wanting a Scrambler for awhile now. I finally sold some bikes and picked up a nice 06 last summer

My intention all along had been to hack it, but I enjoyed riding it solo last summer. I spent some time getting to know the bike before hooking up the sidecar. I was impressed with the machine; it handles well, has nice, tractable power and it looks like a motorcycle is supposed to look.

My bike is basic transportation as well as my preferred form of recreation and my obsession. When the weather began to deteriorate it was time to get serious about a sidecar.

I bought some bits from DMC(Dauntless Motors) and began fabricating a subframe to hang it on

I pulled a rusted Sputnik sidecar from the weeds behind my shop and started lining things up

I replaced the godawful stock taillight with a Lucas repro while I was at it

20131011_125854-M.jpg

I really don't mind the stock turnsignals, so I just made a bracket to relocate them

it took some headscratching to figure out the track width and wheel lead and get the mounts to fit properly

Top rear mount is a little fussy to fit around the pipes

I put the clamp bolt through a tab on top of an arm coming up from the lower mounts. This re-enforces the rear frame of the bike and keeps the clamp from rotating

I eventually got it hooked up

I rode it all winter like that, commuting daily to my job in town

I gradually began shaping bits to make it into the ride I had envisioned

I fabbed a bash plate from an old road sign and rubber mounted it to the subrame

I fashioned a bar to carry my rollchart, enduro computer and gps. It also doubles as a light bar and latch for the sidecar nose

I had some aftermarket KLR pegs I was able to modify to fit the Triumph

I replaced the shifter with a folding MSR lever

I neglected the chain for too long and threw it off when i hit some potholes at speed. I took the opportunity to go down a tooth up front when I replaced the sprockets

I stripped the body to have it sandblasted and powdercoated.

It seemed like forever I was running around with an old wooden rocketbox bungied to the chassis while I waited for it to be finished

while I was waiting I added a speed bleeder and relocated the rear brake

and pulled the studded tire off the back and replaced it and the bald front tire with something with a little more meat

I finally got the body back from the powdercoater. It was worth the wait!

I am putting the trim back together and getting it set up the way I want. I painted the interior with truck bed liner

I replaced the dash lights with LED

10153929_10203514215005585_5666558452864572698_n-M.jpg

I am replacing all the lighting with LED. I already have replaced the head light and tail lights with LEDs and am waiting for the low load flasher to arrive so I can switch the signal lights over.

I still need to wire my fog and driving lights and hook up the enduro computer

I am having new covers made for the sidecar and bike and plan to upholster the sidecar seat to match the bike.

things are coming together

Cool, Cool, Cool!
Now that it's powder coated are you going to keep her clean? :nono:
I like…
Did you build that gate? Looks like a rabbit on two wheels!
Nice TP frame also...

Wow. Nicely done. Looks good too. Does that hack have a brake on that wheel? Just wondering how the rig handles if the wheel doesn't have a brake.

There has been some debate around the homestead about that. Amy doesn't think I should enter it in the Black Dog Dualsport this June, but, well, you know...

Yeah I built the humping bunny gates. It is a sickness...

The sidecar brake is not hooked up. A good sidecar brake can improve handling and stopping distances but a bad sidecar brake is terrifying. THis is a Russian sidecar so the brake is horrid.

This rig handles great. For a sidecar. You know, like a go cart one wheel fell off of...

Burn some mo' rod bro!

Keep us all posted…

I used a trailer plug to hook the sidecar running lights, brake lights and signal to the bike harness. This will all get covered with loom wrap once I wire in the auxiliary lights and accessories

My friend, Casey, sewed up a very nice nylon tonneau cover for the Sputnik today!

I wasn't happy with the luggage rack I'd fabricated for the bike, so I ordered this stainless steel rack from New Bonneville.

Casey is going to make a bike cover that rolls up and attaches to this rack, so it will always be handy and ready to deploy.
