I have a friend who has 150k on his with no problems. I just got unlucky with a bad one off the line. It was a fun car, though.

I agree, you just got unlucky. I had over 230,000 miles on my VW Jetta TDI when I sold it, with ZERO problems. Averaged 44mpg for the six years I had it. Great car. (I wish I'd kept the motor and transplanted it in my Chevy S10 pickup!)

that would be the perfect vehicle for me, hell even if it were front wheel drive. My buddy has an s10 and every time I park my TDI next to it I get ideas...
