My Guitar Thread, take 3.

A month or so ago I finally had the opportunity to buy a nice guitar, and got a Taylor GC-5 that I wrote about here.

The GC-5 is a very nice guitar, but after playing with it for awhile back at home and although it had a very nice and clear upper end, it just didn't have the nice deep bass that I was longing for.
So, back to The Podium I went, and fell for another Taylor that I just had to bring home.
This one was a step up in size, a dreadnought style, and it really rings at the top end and has a very deep and sustaining bass. Plus, it's pretty much the most gorgeous guitar I've ever seen; some may not like the blue, too non-traditional, but it really is stunning.

The inlay consists of abalone, coral and some synthetic materials, the top is solid bearclaw Sitka spruce, back and sides are quilted/flamed maple.

Although this is a limited 'gallery' offering, I do play it and feel that it's a crime to put up nice guitars/bikes/cars/guns just because you're afraid to cause wear. I do make sure I'm not wearing a belt with buckle or my clip-on pocketknife when I'm playing, those could really gouge it up.

Well, gonna go work on my calluses some more!

Thanks, every time I open the case I think, damn, I sure am lucky to have such a great instrument!
The sound really is amazing, I've never heard an acoustic with this much sustain, but it doesn't get muddy, every note is clear and enunciated.

It is strung with medium gauge D'Addario EXP's right now, just for kicks when I need to replace them I'm going to try Elixir mediums, I've heard good things about them as well.

Right now, my main interest is fingerstyle, which is just as well because I'm afraid if I started using a plectrum I'd scratch the beautiful top.
(Probably will end up with another guitar, with a pickguard, at some point down the line for that sort of use.)

I forgot to take pictures of the case, but it has a nice Taylor hard case with faux brown leather exterior and a very plush and snug magenta interior.

I don't raise any fish, but koi do hold special significance for me.
Koi, formally "Nishigikoi", translates to Living Jewels, which is the model name of this guitar.
Koi represent strength, perseverance and courage in the Japanese tradition.
In mythology, demons controlled the rivers and falls, and made stronger currents and higher waterfalls to daunt the koi. Not to be discouraged, the strong and righteous koi were able to overcome the demons, swim upstream and leap up the falls and become dragons free from bondage.
I was born in a year of the dragon and we all have demons we confront throughout life, so, this has a special place in my mind/heart.

Well, off to hack some more, -K

it's a beauty for sure K, awesome inlay work on it. I'd bet you could sell the living daylights out of those to some of the Koi breeders not to mention the entire Koi community....how could you resist such a beautiful way to display those fish....?
Thanks for posting the pics....

Thanks, I thought you'd appreciate it. A friend of mine raises Koi, he's got I think 5-6 right now, some about 6-8 inches, and a couple smaller. One is really cool, I'm not sure which variety it is specifically, but he calls it a 'ghost Koi' and it looks like a skeleton with black and white.
Anyway, he saw my guitar the other day, after seeing pics online, and he says it looks even better in person, and I pretty much agree.

But, with a guitar looks certainly aren't everything, and this one has the tone to back it up. I feel very humble, I have many years of practice ahead of me before I feel like my skill deserves such a fine instrument - but hey, small chance I'll ever 'outgrow' this one!

I took a couple pictures outside in the sun:
