Air/Fuel Ratio Gauge

Does anyone out there have any real world experience with installing an air/fuel ratio gauge on a Triumph twin? I found this resource online and it seems the Harley guys have been doing this a long time. https://www.rbracing-rsr.com/rsrgauge.htm I am thinking this approach would really help me tune my twin Mikuni carbs in a real-world situation, rather than on a dyno.

I'm interested in feedback also as I've been looking closely at this one from Innovate Motorsports http://innovatemotorsports.com/products/MTXL.php and AEM Electronics http://www.aemelectronics.com/produ...ego-afr-gauge/digital-wideband-uego-afr-gauge Was planning on getting a bung welded in the crossover pipe and once set threading in an insert to block it off when not in use. I have found a local shop that will weld in the exhaust bung for about $20-$30. I'm still running the stock carbs but was seriously thinking about upgrading to the Mikuni carb kit from Bonneville Performance.

I figured I would need the AF gauge no matter what so I'm going to try to further dial in the stock carbs as I'm researching the Mikuni carbs. My is a stock 790 with cone filters and British Customs Sleepers for the exhaust. Any feedback on the performance improvement of the Mikuni's would be greatly appreciated as I've heard nothing but good things about them.

IF you're going to spend the money on having things welded, the a/f meter, and the carbs themselves, I would just spend the coin for some dyno tuning runs. You can find deals or go to a dyno day and save coin. If you're worried about how often dyno days come up, you could go old school and throw in a fresh set of plugs and read em and tune to a good approximation that way.

Personally, I like to tinker. So I'd prefer to have a bung welded into the headers and be able to run my own air/fuel sniffer on the bike if for no other reason then to see what it's telling me. Once you've got it dialed in, simply remove and plug up the bung.

I like tools.

I have the Innovate MTXL digital gauge...best tuning tool I've ever purchased and totally takes the guesswork out of the carb jetting dance. If you don't want to weld in the bung, there are adapters that screw into the smaller EFI sensor locations on stock headers that work well. In my case, I only fit the gauge when tuning and remove it afterwards to avoid the distraction. I run the power off my battery tender harness plug....works great. Highly recommend this if you change pipes out ever or simply want to tune your machine to its full potential....

Cheers,

beemerrich - on the MTXL product, do you know where would they would advise locating the sensor bung on a 2-into-1 stainless exhaust system?
