Howdy Budd! Try a MSF course(or it's Canadian equivalent). Get licensed , get a price break on insurance, and get to riding.

Welcome to the congregation. Like Hank suggested, take a motorcycle saftey course and get to riding. Start out slow, don't try and ride outside you skill level and before you know it, you'll be up to speed in no time.
