Bonneville 2004 fuel reserve

Just went out on my 800 Bonny (full tank of fuel) and put the fuel tap on reserve by mistake. The bike stopped after about 15 miles - out of fuel. I turned the tap to the on position and it started and ran OK. Is this normal as I thought if you put it on to reserve it would empty the tank?
Anyone else noticed this?

I have a 2008 Bonnie with the stock petcock and it does not work this way. It works as you would expect... as I ride and the full tank (4.2 gallons) lowers and gets to about 1 gallon, it starts to cough, and if I switch to reserve, it will continue until empty.
