"Becoming one with his turbocharged, methanol-fueled Hayabusa-based racebike designed to harness 1000 horsepower, this mild-mannered fish farmer and marine biologist from Wimauma, Fla. smashed his top-speed record of 278.6 mph rolling on DOT-approved BST carbon-fiber street wheels."

I wonder what they did to the front fork mount/steering head? Must've had one helluva steering stabilizer. Can you even imagine how quick things would go sideways if you got a wobble at those speeds? Holy shit.

if it was on salt the whole bike would essentially float, I'd bet just a regular gpr stabilizer cranked up

Love that he was in the Northeast!

Scott Guthrie, a fellow racer and team owner who has ridden to more than 200 land-speed records, said, “When Don Vesco set the record in 1975, he had a full-on factory effort, with everything paid for, multiple factory engines and plenty of world-record experience. Bill is a privateer in the truest sense of the word, building his bikes at home with help from friends and associates. While Bill is always short on cash, he is very long on brains, will power and the desire to be the best in the world.”

I can't imagine how scared he must have been. No matter how good you are its just a split second to total destruction........or glory.

I hve talked with a lot of these LSR guys - they say that they loosen up the dampener most of the way for anything above about 170. you have to have the aerodynamics and weight balance correct - that keeps the front tracking correctly.

Scariest part of this run from what I read was that the front wheel lifted at around 230 when he shifted. :motorbike2::eek:
