    Sold my America....

Gents: I halfheartedly sold my 02 America yesterday. It rode off with a fine Pittsburgh PA fireman who I'll direct to this site. I still have my '66 chopper and am looking for either a restored vintage Trump or an MGB/TR-3 to enjoy with the wife. Thanks for all your camaraderie and ride...

Bonnie keeps stopping when riding but will always restart

I had very similar symptoms with my America. I replaced my kickstand spring and all is well. The spring was weak and let the switch momentarily cut the bike off over bumps, etc. Your "bump" comment makes me think you have the same problem. The spring is less than $10 if memory serves.

    Car question

Those 80's era GM vehicles are pretty bad, I'm glad you reconsidered. Good luck getting something new for the garage. We sold our '96 Impala SS last Fall, I still get a lump not seeing it on one side, so I can appreciate your feelings.

How old and how many years have you been riding?

49 (50 in August...). I had my motocycle license a week after I turned 16 in 1977. Rode till I was about 25, than took a 20 year hiatus and bought my America in 2003.

Blue headers - once and for all

I guess I'm the only America/Speedy owner to pipe in here. We have double-walled pipes, so the damage can be removed. When I bought my '02, it had 1,200 miles on it, off-road pipes and the A/F had not been touched, AI was also intact. The header pipes were golden/brown/blue. I removed the AI...

8.9 Earthquake and my Triumph (ALL JAPAN DISCUSSIONS HERE)

I'm glad you are still OK Motomaniac. I can't imagine living daily under that type of stress, but on the other hand I guess you are thankful not to have been injured or killed. I'm still surprised a 7.1 quake doesn't even get as much as a footnote over here. 15 years ago, that would be been...

8.9 Earthquake and my Triumph (ALL JAPAN DISCUSSIONS HERE)

Wow, Japan experienced a 7.1 quake yesterday and that barely makes the news. I heard it on the radio, it didn't even make my local paper.

    My new Triumph!

How about power-wise? You've had bigger and smaller displacement bikes. How does this one stack up? Is it satisfying enough for you?

    My new Triumph!

Eagerly waiting for a ride report on this one. I'm going to need a replacement for my aging America (40k) and my use needs seem to mimic yours.

A Tent with a Motorcycle Garage

Same here. Camping for us is staying at a Fairfield Inn vs. a Courtyard.... I think that I'd rather have a tent with more living quarters than bike space. Isn't your adventure bike going to be pretty cruddy anyway? <g>

    Stripping Fork Paint

I did 1500 than 2000 grit wet paper as well, before the buffing stage. Wet sanding was pretty rough on the fingers. I ended up taping each finger tip with duct tape. My forks have held up well, requiring very little care (annual polish with some Mothers)

A vintage motorcycle mechanic’s lament for the future

I read that this winter. Not bad, a little deep in theory at times. I picked it up via our town library.

A vintage motorcycle mechanic’s lament for the future

I don't get people who will live with a problem vs. at least attempting a fix (like F-frames coworker). Last weekend, we were at my wife's boss house he rents during the MD legislative session. My wife stays there when he goes home and mentioned the downstairs was pretty cold. I noticed the...

    Eeek Guns!

A good pump air gun was a lot of fun when I was teen. You can even shoot them in your basement with the proper backdrop and pellet trap. 10-15 pumps usually yielded a satisfactory shot with a Crossman (back in the 70's, haven't fired a modern pump gun). We used .17 caliber pellets, but they...

A vintage motorcycle mechanic’s lament for the future

The sad thing is you can buy an OBDII code reader program for a lot less than an I-phone or even a mid-level I-pod. With that tool and a laptop (which most self-respecting students seem to own), you can troubleshoot virtually any modern car. The "nerds" seem to be taking over the hot-rod...

A vintage motorcycle mechanic’s lament for the future

Watching that did remind me about Sal's post. Sad, but some hope. My daughter is friends with a group of 20-something yr old guys who ride, build and wrench on a mix of old and new machines. They hang out every Monday at a shop in town. They get it. But Cramer is right, those numbers are...

    Auxillary Power

I just used the two lead wire to the running light bulb in the headlight. I believe it was a black & yellow wire combo, but easy enough to unplug from the bulb. I cut my connector off, but if I were to do it over again, I'd just wire the correspending connector to the 12V power socket, than...
